The lesson begins with a "read aloud" with the wordless picture book The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney. The teacher models how to tell a story by just looking a the pictures by focusing on emotions, gestures, the background, and actions. As an real life extension, the class emails their version on the book to the author. Assessed using formative checklist and writing rubric. (Click title for full lesson)

Students then get to create their own monsters using geometric shapes, in connection to math standards, and then describe their monsters using "colorful" adjectives. Assessed using a writing rubric and formative checklists. (Click title to see full lesson)
